Getting started recording in Zencastr as a guest

First time joining a recording on Zencastr? Learn how to use the green room and join the recording room.

This guide walks you through joining a Zencastr recording as a guest, from opening your invite link to finishing your recording. You don’t need a Zencastr account to join, and joining takes just a few steps. This guide covers joining on the web, using a computer or laptop.

Quick tips

A few quick checks before you join a recording can help the recording go smoothly.

  • Use Chrome, Edge, or Brave in a regular window, not incognito or private mode.

  • Have at least 8 GB of RAM, 10 GB of free disk space, and an internet connection of at least 5 Mbps (10 Mbps or higher is ideal).

  • We recommend wearing headphones. Without them, your microphone can pick up other participants’ voices from your speakers, which creates echo.

Entering the guest green room

Each recording room has its own link, and your host sends it to you. Click the link to enter the guest green room, where you check your camera, microphone, and speakers before you enter the recording room.

  1. Open your invite link.

  2. Click Allow to give Zencastr access to your camera and microphone.

  3. Enter your name.

  4. Click the ^ button next to the Microphone icon to review your microphone and speaker selections.

  5. Click the ^ button next to the Camera icon to review your camera selection.

    1. Note: if the camera icon is grayed out, your host is recording audio only.

  6. When you’re ready, click Join now to enter the recording room.

In the recording room

Once you join, you can manage your camera and audio, raise your hand, send messages, and review your health check. Your host controls the recording.

Health checks

When you enter the recording room, Zencastr checks that your browser, devices, and system resources meet the requirements to record. When everything passes, you’ll see a green message that says “All health checks passed.” You can review your health check at any time.

  1. In the Room list, click the three-dot menu next to your name.

  2. Click Healthcheck.

Camera and audio

Review or change your camera, microphone, and speaker selections. Once the recording starts you’ll only be able to change your speaker settings.

  1. Click the Microphone icon to mute or unmute your microphone.

    1. Click the ^ button next to the Microphone icon to review or change your microphone and speaker settings.

  2. If the recording is using video, click the Camera icon to turn your camera on or off.

    1. Click the ^ button next to the Camera icon to review or change your camera settings.

Raise hand

Raising your hand lets you get other participants’ attention without interrupting the conversation.

  1. Click Raise hand from the bottom menu.

  2. The hand icon will appear on your frame.

Messages

Messages let you communicate with everyone in the recording room without interrupting the conversation.

  1. In the Room list on the right, click Message the room.

  2. Type your message. Click the + icon if you want to upload media.

  3. Send it to the participants in the room.

    1. Note: Messages aren’t included in the recording.

  4. Click X to close the Messages panel.

Once the recording starts

When the host clicks Record, a 3-second countdown begins. When the screen turns black, you’re recording. While you record, you can mute and unmute your microphone, turn your camera on or off, raise your hand, or send a message.

After the recording ends

After the host stops the recording, stay in the recording room until your tracks have finished uploading.

Important: Closing the tab or leaving the room before uploads are complete can interrupt the upload process.

  1. After the host stops the recording, stay in the recording room.

  2. The tracks will start uploading.

  3. Wait for the message confirming files have uploaded.

  4. When all the tracks have finished uploading, the screen turns white. Your host will let you know when it’s safe to leave the recording room.

  5. Click Leave to exit.
